Patman Du Charmil bids for a well deserved Cheltenham triumph in the £55,000 Grade Three betchronicle.com Trophy Chase (2.05pm) over two miles, five furlongs on Festival Trials Day, Saturday, January 26.
The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained six-year-old has been in tremendous form in four starts at Prestbury Park this term, finishing in the frame three times, including when runner-up to Vodka Bleu in the Listed TurfTV New Year Chase on January 1, after attempting to make all.
Patman Du Charmil previously finished a game third to subsequent Grade One Victor Chandler Chase winner Tamarinbleu in the Grade Three Boylesports.com Gold Cup over the course and distance on December 15.
The gelding was also beaten under six lengths when fifth to L'Antartique in the Grade Three Paddy Power Gold Cup at The Open on November 17 and came third in the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Novices' Chase over a longer trip on October 20.
Twiston-Davies revealed this morning: "Patman Du Charmil will run in the betchronicle.com Trophy on Saturday. He's been in fine form this season and hasn't run a bad race. It was a game effort last time and I was very pleased with him. It would be very nice if we could win this one.
"He just keeps coming up against well handicapped horses. If you look at the Tamarinbleu race, it was an unbelievable run behind that horse when you consider it now and the same can probably be said about the run behind Vodka Bleu last time.
"The soft ground won't be a problem, it's what he ran on last time and Paddy (Brennan) will ride."
Patman Du Charmil faces stiff competition for the prestigious prize, which was won last year by the David Pipe-trained Whispered Secret, with subsequent Racing Post Plate victor Idole First in third.
Gloucestershire handler Tom George has entered exciting French recruit Nacarat, who scored an impressive victory on his British debut at Wincanton on January 5. The seven-year-old had smart form across the Channel and cruised to a 14-length triumph last time in a handicap chase over this distance.
Slad-based George revealed: "We are undecided at this stage as to whether Nacarat goes to Cheltenham for the betchronicle.com Trophy. He'll work tomorrow and we'll see how he is. He's entered and I'll have a chat with his owner later in the week and decide whether to run him this weekend.
"It's hard to know whether to stick to a flat track for now with him having come from France, or whether we go to Cheltenham.
"We bought him at the sales and he couldn't have done any better at Wincanton on his first start for us. He won very nicely and the handicapper has reacted accordingly by putting him up 18lb.
"He did all that we asked him to do - he jumped well, looked good and it was very encouraging. It was quite an impressive performance. He likes soft ground and he loves jumping."
The betchronicle.com Trophy is sponsored fo the first time in 2008 by the Dublin-based bookmaker and has attracted 24 high-class entries, including the Jonjo O'Neill-trained Butler's Cabin, the current 16/1 second-favourite for the John Smith's Grand National, and his stablemate Bob Hall, who was runner-up in the Listed Jewson Novices' Handicap Chase at the 2007 Festival.
Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has engaged a classy duo in Opera Mundi, winner of a three-mile chase at Haydock on November 24, and last season's Grade One Scilly Isles Novices' Chase victor New Little Bric.
Vodka Bleu is on a hat-trick after winning the Listed TurfTV New Year Chase, while Madison Du Berlais, also trained by Pipe, was runner-up to his stablemate in the BGC Silver Cup at Ascot in December and is also engaged.
Other entries include the Irish raider Time To Sell from Eugene O'Sullivan's yard, the classy Roman Ark, Magic Sky, Cossack Dancer, Limited Edition, Private Be, De Blanc, Maljimar, Preacher Boy, Model Son and Tidal Fury.
The betchronicle.com Trophy Chase is part of a fantastic seven-race card that includes four Grade Two contests, the feature event being the £100,000 Grade Two Letheby & Christopher Chase (2.40pm), one of the premier trials for the Grade One totesport Gold Cup at The Festival.

BRILLIANT RACING ON CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL TRIALS DAY
Cheltenham's £100,000 Grade Two Letheby & Christopher Chase, run over three miles, one and a half furlongs, is the highlight of Cheltenham's Festival Trials Day on Saturday, January 26, 2008 - the final day of racing at Prestbury Park before The Festival in March.
The Letheby & Christopher Chase, due off at 2.40pm, often has a strong influence on the chasing championship, the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Last year, Cheltenham specialist Exotic Dancer was successful prior to finding only Kauto Star too good in the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Three of the last 12 runnings of the Letheby & Christopher Chase have generated the winner of the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season.
The 2000 Letheby & Christopher Chase was won by the Noel Chance-trained Looks Like Trouble, who returned to Prestbury Park two months later to capture chasing's top event.
The 1999 renewal saw See More Business, who had been successful in the 1998 Letheby & Christopher Chase, finish third to Cyfor Malta and the Paul Nicholls-trained chaser then captured the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup.
See More Business also landed the Letheby & Christopher Chase in 2001 but was denied the opportunity to win the Gold Cup again when that year's Festival was cancelled because of the foot and mouth outbreak. The fine chaser ran well to be third in the 2002 totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup
One Man triumphed in the 1997 Letheby & Christopher Chase, the first occasion that the great chaser won at Cheltenham and, after his sixth in that year's Gold Cup, he returned to Prestbury Park in 1998 to win the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase over two miles at The Festival.
The 1995 Letheby & Christopher Chase went to Master Oats, who beat the previous year's heroine Dubacilla by 15 lengths. The pair returned to the course two months later to compete in the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup, filling the same positions and by exactly the same margin.
The other races on Saturday, January 26, are headed by the £60,000 Grade Two Byrne Group Cleeve Hurdle (3.50pm), which was increased in distance to three miles in 2005, having previously been run over an extended two and a half miles.
Last year Blazing Bailey landed the prestigious contest by four lengths from Inglis Drever. At The Festival, Inglis Drever went on to land his second Ladbrokes World Hurdle with Blazing Bailey taking third.
Lady Rebecca had made the Byrne Group Cleeve Hurdle her own from 1999-2001. There was hardly a dry eye at the racecourse when Venetia Williams' charge came up the hill to win well in 2001 to complete her treble.
The calibre of the winners of the Byrne Group Cleeve Hurdle is exemplified by Large Action, twice placed in hurdling's top event, the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle (third to Flakey Dove in 1994 and runner-up to Alderbrook the following season). Flakey Dove herself had won this contest in 1994 under a fine ride from Richard Dunwoody for Herefordshire-based trainer Richard Price, less than two months before she took her place in racing history at The Festival.
The seven-race programme on Saturday, January 26, begins at 1.00pm with the £30,000 Grade Two Ballymore Properties Novices' Hurdle, which was run on Festival Trials Day for the first time in 2005, when won by the French-trained Ambobo. The contest was previously staged at Uttoxeter and has been won by future Festival winners Iris's Gift in 2003 and Monsignor in 2000. The 2007 victor Wichita Lineman went on to success at The Festival in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle, while the third Massini's Maguire was also victorious at The Festival in the Ballymore Properties Novices' Hurdle.
The £25,000 Timeform Novices' Handicap Chase follows at 1.35pm. Lacdoudal, successful in 2005, progressed to win the Betfred Gold Cup at Sandown the following season. La Landiere, trained by Richard Phillips, landed a five-timer in the 2003 renewal and she then followed up in the Racing Post Chase at Kempton and the Cathcart Chase at The Festival. The previous year's running went to the powerful combination of Martin Pipe and Tony McCoy thanks to Royal Auclair, who also subsequently captured the Cathcart Chase at The Festival.
The £55,000 Grade Three Betchronicle.com Trophy Chase (2.10pm), is a handicap over two miles and five furlongs, and has been won by plenty of very good chasers including Lady Cricket (2003), Foly Pleasant (2002), Young Spartacus (2001), Papillon (1998), Dublin Flyer (1997), Couldnt Be Better (1995) and Waterloo Boy (1994).
The £30,000 Grade Two Wragge & Co Finesse Juvenile Four-Year-Old Hurdle (3.15pm) is one of the top races of the season for juvenile hurdlers and was won in 2007 by Katchit, who returned to Cheltenham to collect the JCB Triumph Hurdle at The Festival.
The £25,000 Brightwells Cheltenham Bloodstock Auctions Handicap Hurdle (4.25pm), run over two miles and a furlong, concludes the racing action.
Saturday, January 26, is the last day of racing at Cheltenham before The Festival on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 11, 12, 13, & 14.

FACTS AND FIGURES FOR THE LETHEBY & CHRISTOPHER CHASE
The inaugural running of the Letheby & Christopher Chase took place in 1980, when the Nicky Henderson-trained Raffi Nelson prevailed under jockey Steve Smith Eccles. The two most successful trainers in the history of this prestigious event are David Elsworth, who recorded two victories courtesy of Lesley Ann in 1982 and Combs Ditch the following season and Paul Nicholls, who struck twice with See More Business in 1998 and again three years later. Elsworth would have made it three in 1988, but his "winner" Cavvies Clown was subsequently disqualified after failing a dope test.
Rince Ri became the first and to date only Irish-trained winner in the history of the Letheby & Christopher Chase when he scored for Ted Walsh under a fine ride from his son Ruby in 2002, while in 2004 Jair Du Cochet was the first French-trained winner.
Steve Smith Eccles is the most successful rider in the Letheby & Christopher Chase, having won on Raffi Nelson in 1980, Misty Spirit six seasons later and Sibton Abbey in 1993. Colin Brown, Richard Dunwoody, Norman Williamson and Tony McCoy have all taken this illustrious event twice. Brown won on Lesley Ann in 1982 and Combs Ditch the following season, Richard Dunwoody secured a place on the roll of honour courtesy of West Tip in 1985 and One Man in 1997, Williamson won on Master Oats in 1995 and Looks Like Trouble in 2000, while McCoy, the only current jockey to have been successful more than once, scored on Cyfor Malta in 1999 and Exotic Dancer in 2007.
Four Letheby & Christopher Chase winners have subsequently gone on to glory in the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup. The Peter Easterby-trained Little Owl won the Letheby & Christopher Chase in 1981 before taking chasing's Blue Riband in the same year. Master Oats achieved the same feat for trainer Kim Bailey in 1995. See More Business, successful in the 1998 Letheby & Christopher Chase and then again in 2001, captured the Gold Cup in 1999, while Looks Like Trouble achieved this brilliant double in 2000.
The only amateur rider to have scored in the Letheby & Christopher Chase was Jim Wilson, who partnered his own Little Owl in 1981. Their greatest moment came with victory in the 1981 totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Favourites have gained success in just seven of the 25 runnings of the Letheby & Christopher Chase, demonstrating what a competitive race it is. The most recent market leader to prevail was the Martin Pipe-trained Cyfor Malta in 1999.
See You Sometime (2006), Grey Abbey (2005) and See More Business (2001) are the three oldest winners of the Letheby & Christopher Chase - all were aged 11. At the other end of the spectrum, six-year-old Cyfor Malta was the youngest horse to score. A breakdown of the winners by age gives six-year-olds - 1; seven-year-olds - 7; eight-year-olds - 9; nine-year-olds - 5; 10-year-olds - 0; 11-year-olds - 3.
